Season 39 Hall of Fame Voter’s Guide

4 07 2016

Did a little research before posting this. Reviewing the 21 hitters in the HoF so far, here are their positions based upon the “eye test” of their defensive fielding stats over their careers:

1B – 9
2B – 1
SS – 1
3B – 1
C – 2
LF – 1
CF – 0
RF – 5
DH – 1

Some of these certainly are debatable, but at least a starting reference point.

Next, here are the season 39 nominated players who were mentioned in chat as receiving votes or who based upon stats/awards seemed worthy of further analysis:

Hitters: (Hits/HR/RBI/SB/AVG)

2B – Daneker- 2593/394/1374/79/.270 – 8AS, 2 GG, 4 SS
LF – Matsui- 2524/615/1718/216/.270 – 1AS, 1 MVP, 1 SS
RF – Blair – 2386/396/1342/343/.275 – 11 AS, 2 MVP, 1 GG, 4 SS
LF – Torres – 2372/620/1624/47/.268 – 5 AS, 1 MVP, ROY, 2 SS, 4 WSR
SS – Marmol – 2306/472/1464/299/.274 – 7 AS, ROY, 1 GG, 8 SS
SS – Mercedes – 2470/251/1115/445/.286 – 6 AS, 4 SS
2B – Ceden0 – 2123/219/860/450/.274 – 8 AS, 2 GG, 2 SS, 5 WSR
CF – Tekotte – 1563/412/1043/322/.258 – 7 AS, 3 GG, 5 SS

Commentary –
– Daneker (2b)- only 1 other 2b in the HoF, HoFer David Day is clearly superior to Daneker, although Daneker has more HR (394 to 321) – 8 time all star, good hits (2593) and HR total – YES
– Matsui (LF)- 615 homers is nice but only 1 all star award in combo with 1 MVP – good long career but wasn’t elite compared to his contemporaries – NO
– Blair (RF)- 11 AS and 2 MVP is impressive, but 396 homers would be the 4th lowest total the HoF, hit total (2386) is not special – MAYBE
– Torres (LF)- 620 is most homers on the ballot, 5 AS as compared to 1 AS for Matsui (615 HR), 4 World Series Rings – YES
– Marmol (SS)- 7 time all star, and 8 time Silver Slugger – 472 HR – only 1 other SS in HoF, 2306 hit total would be lowest among non-catchers – YES
– Mercedes (SS) – stats not impressive but 6 time AS, ultimately Marmol is the better SS on the ballot – NO
– Cedeno (2b) – the stats just aren’t there, 860 RBI is 400 less than anyone in the HoF, nice awards line though between 8AS and 5 WSR – NO
– Tekotte – (CF) – that he is a CF makes him worthy of a mention here, but stats don’t compare to HoF  – NO

Pitchers: (Wins/Saves/Ks/WHIP/ERA)

Truby – 263/5/2893/1.43/4.75 – 3 AS
Blasco – 233/0/3371/1.31/4.00 – 3 AS
Suzuki – 223/0/2331/1.11/2.88 – 7 AS, 3 CY, 3 WSR
Kim –     115/421/1671/1.16/3.03 – 11 AS
Pescado- 80/591/876/1.22/3.35 – 7 AS, 1 FoY
Lange  – 55/516/1019/1.08/2.96 – 6 AS, 1 FoY
Sojo – 28/534/824/1.27/3.22 – 7 AS, 2 FoY

Commentary:
– Truby – 263 wins is 4th highest in Shtickless history, 4.75 ERA is much higher than currently highest in HoF (3.57) – NO
– Blasco – 3371 Ks ranks 1st all-time in Shtickless history, 233 wins would be 2nd lowest total among SPs in HoF, 3 AS is average,  – MAYBE
– Suzuki – 223 wins would be 2nd lowest in HoF among SPs, 2331 KS is lower end of pack in HoF – 7 AS plus 3 CY is impressive, 3 CY would be 4th highest in HoF – MAYBE
– Kim – unique combo of 100+ wins and 400+ saves – although not unprecedented – Lackey in HOF has 134/609 to Kim’s 115/421 – 11 AS is impressive amongst contemporaries- MAYBE
– Pescado – 591 saves is 2nd highest in Shtickless history, 7 AS games – YES
– Lange – 516 saves not in top 5 in league history, 1.08 WHIP is tied 4th in league history – 6 AS games -MAYBE
– Sojo – 534 saves is 5th in league history – 7 AS, 2 FoY – WHIP/ERA comparable to Pescado 1.27/3.22 to 1.22/3.35 but 57 less saves – MAYBE

Final Analysis –
YES:
2B Daneker – stats as a 2B plus 8 AS
LF Torres – 620 HR, 1 MVP, 5AS and 4 WSR
SS Marmol -stats as a SS plus 7AS and 8 Silver Sluggers
RP Pescado – 2nd time all time in saves plus 7 AS

Maybe:
RF Blair – 11 AS and 2 MVP but not the career stats compared to current HoFers
SP Blasco – 1st all time in Ks in league history but a 4.00 ERA
SP Suzuki – 7AS, 3 CY – but career totals low for HoF
RP Kim – 11 AS but not much else career totals-wise
RP Lange – good but not great
RP Sojo – 534 saves 5th in league history – not more worthy than Pescado

My recommendation – Vote for Daneker, Torres, Marmol, Pescado and Blasco as the all-time leader in Strikeouts – maybe next year for Blair, Suzuki, Sojo – I don’t see Kim or Lange getting in
